Early years and childhood
She entered the world on August 28, 1984, in Lagos, Nigeria. Mercy’s military father left her mother when she was 2 years old and took Mercy with him to live with him.
She is the third of seven kids. She has 3 older sisters and 3 brothers who are younger. When she was young, she was close to all of them.
She attended a primary institution in both Calabar and Lagos. She went to secondary school in Port Harcourt, River State, at “Rivers State Secondary” and “Nigerian Navy Secondary School.” She didn’t pass her “University Matriculation Examination” (UMF), so she went into acting.
She grew up in a poor family. She sometimes didn’t go to school so she could sell drinking water and other things to help support her family. She has even worked as a housekeeper. Once, her family lived in an unfinished building with holes in the roof and no plaster on the walls or floor, with lizards.
Career
After she failed an exam at college, Mercy Johnson asked a friend to help her get into the movie business. She says that it took over a year for someone to call her back. In 2004, she got her first big break in a movie called “The Maid.” She played a maid who was possessed for this part. The rest of that year, she made three more movies. In 2005, she came up with six movies. In the three years that followed, she put out almost a hundred movies. When she realized that things with Prince Odi were getting serious in 2009, she stopped taking on romantic roles. He didn’t like them, and she loved him so much that she didn’t think twice about giving them up. She also cut back on the number of naked scenes she did. So far, she has been in more than 150 movies. Many of them have been big box office hits. Even though she plans to be in a lot more, she has only been in a few movies since 2009. In November 2013, she was told she couldn’t act in Nollywood anymore because her demands were too high and she was too expensive. In May of the next year, the ban was taken off. The last movie she was in was “Thy Will Be Done,” which came out in February 2015.

Mercy Johnson married Prince Odianosen Okojie, an Edo Prince, in a traditional Edo ceremony at her family’s home. They wore clothes with special meanings. On August 27, 2011, the ceremony took place at her family’s home in Oke Adan, Gospel Village, Iyano, Isashi, Okoko, Lagos State. She got married to Prince Odi in the middle of a scandal when a woman named Lovely Okojie said that he was still married to her. Prince Odi said they were never legally married. Instead, he said, his parents stood in for him at a traditional ceremony so that his children could be seen as real. On December 30, 2012, she gave birth to a daughter, Purity Ozioma Okojie, at an unnamed hospital in the United States. Her father gave her the name “Purity.” He says that he chose her name because of all the great things about his wife. Henry Ozioma Okojie, their first child, was born on October 15, 2014. Baltimore, Maryland is where he entered the world. She started the “Mercy Johnson Foundation” to help children and widows who were poor. She regularly gives money to the fund.
