Career

Even though AB de Villiers was good at more than one sport, he decided to make a living as a cricket player. He started playing for the Titans in 2003. The next year, he became an overseas player for the Carrickfergus Cricket Club in Northern Ireland. He played his first test match against England in December 2004. Even though he was only twenty, his performance was very well liked. Over the years, he also earned a reputation for being a great fielder. He became known when he played in the 2007 World Cup. But his performance in the tournament wasn’t all that great, and he was even criticized for it. Still, his team made it to the semifinals, where Australia beat them. The next year, AB de Villiers became well-known after he scored a double century in a match against India. He was the first South African player to ever do this. He was not out even though he scored 217 runs. In 2008-09, he played his first test series in Perth, Australia, where he helped his team win. It had also been 15 years since South Africa had won in Australia. His play at the World Cup in 2011 was also very good. During the tournament, he made two hundreds, making him the first South African to do so. Even though he did a great job, South Africa lost to New Zealand in the quarterfinals. He was made captain of the One Day International team later in 2011. AB de Villiers did a great job again during the 2015 World Cup. He had already led his team to a number of test and ODI victories. He scored more runs than anyone else on the South African team. His team made it to the semi-finals while he was captain. But New Zealand beat his team again, just like they did in the last World Cup. After helping his team win several games, he decided in January 2017 not to play in most of South Africa’s test matches for the year. He started playing again at the beginning of 2018 and went with the Indian team to South Africa. In the second game of the next test series against Australia, he got his 22nd test century and helped his team win by six wickets.
On May 23, 2018, AB de Villiers said that he would no longer play any kind of international cricket. At the time, he was still at the top of his game.
